Elevated levels of cholesterol in the blood have been established as a serious risk factor for heart disease and stroke. These are one of the leading causes of death in the Netherlands. An inherited disease known as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) causes an increase in the "bad" form of cholesterol in blood levels. This bad form is called LDL, or Low Density Lipoprotein.
This experiment involves a simulated genetic test in which patients are tested for a DNA polymorphism linked to the FH gene.
The kit contains: DNA samples, UltraSpec agarose, electrophoresis buffer, 10 x gel loading solution, FlashBlue staining and disposable pipette tips.
Also required: electrophoresis device , micropipettes, light box and a microwave or heating plate.
