Zeeman Effect Lab
This lab allows for the experimental study of the Zeeman effect, a physical phenomenon illustrating the splitting of an atom's spectral lines when subjected to a magnetic field. It enables observation of both the normal and anomalous Zeeman effects using a single, comprehensive setup.
Key Features
• Study of both normal and anomalous Zeeman effects on a single setup
• High-precision Fabry-Pérot interferometer for detailed spectral line analysis
• Precise magnetic field adjustment using a finely tunable electromagnet
Topics Covered
• Bohr atomic model
• Quantization of energy levels
• Electron spin
• Bohr magneton
• Fabry-Pérot interferometer
Principle and Objective
The Zeeman effect corresponds to the splitting of atomic spectral lines when atoms are placed in a magnetic field. The simplest case, called the normal Zeeman effect, results in a division into three spectral components.
In this lab, a cadmium spectral lamp is subjected to different magnetic field intensities. The study focuses on the splitting of the lines at 643.8 nm (red) and 508.6 nm (green), observed using a Fabry-Pérot interferometer.
The analysis of the measurements allows for the precise determination of the Bohr magneton.
